He was the pastor at St. Mary's Church in Hazelton for ten years.

FORT ATKINSON - Gene Gerleman, 68, of Fort Atkinson, died on Monday (Nov. 12, 2001) at his home, surrounded by his family, after a short courageous battle with cancer. Gene was born on Jan. 22, 1933 the son of Joseph and Rose (Langreck)Gerleman, near St. Lucas. Gene attended country school near Little Turkey and then graduated from St. Lucas Catholic School in St. Lucas.
He served in the U.S. Army in England from 1953-1955. Gene married Joanne Kupka on April 26, 1958, at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. He returned to the area and worked several jobs. Gene then worked for the Secondary Roads Department of Winneshiek County, mowing for the last 15 years.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Huber-Steffes American Legion Post #672 of Fort Atkinson. Gene was an avid sports fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Detroit Lions and of racecar driver, Jeff Gordon. 4-Rev. Hugo J. Gerleman S.J. was born on 13 Aug 1903 in Saint Lucas, died on 15 Aug 1972 in St. Louis, Missouri at age 69, and was buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

From 1917 to 1924 he attended St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin. He attended St. Stanislaus in Missouri from 1924 to 1928. In 1929 he went to Gregorian University in Rome and returned from LeHavre, France to New York, arriving on 12 Aug 1931. He sang his first solemn high mass at St. Luke's, June 20, 1936. He attended St. Mary's College in Kansas in 1937. He spoke English, German, Italian and French. He was ordained on 24 June 1936 and taught at Prairie du Chien, Denver and Florissant. From 1950 to 1963 he was an instructor of Jesuits taking their final vows at Decatur, Illinois. He was in Europe again and sailed from Cherbourge, France on the Queen Elizabeth arriving in New York on 3 Apr 1956. From 1959 to 1968 he served at the Regis Jesuit University in Denver where he taught Theology, Latin and Classical Greek. In 1968 he was an editor of books at the Institute of Jesuit Sources at St. Louis University. He died from cancer.
After his death, one of his friends wrote this, "He was one of those pillars on whom the Society and the Church have been built; a quiet, deep, humble, prayerful Jesuit, who knew how to take the best out of all the events of the past decade, and grow with them, and transmit this to others."

Evelyn was born on 3 Aug 1914 in Waucoma and died on 15 Nov 1993 in Keystone Care Center at age 79. They had five children.
He was a boiler operator/engineer for the State Juvenile Home in Toledo. When they retired, they moved to Cedar Rapids.

5-Leonard Gregory Gerleman was born on 5 Aug 1936 in Waucoma and died on 18 Aug 2007 in St. Luke's Hospital of cancer at age 71. He married Karen A. Brunssen on 15 Jun 1963 in Van Horn, daughter of Roland Arthur Brunssen and Elnora Anders. Karen was born on 1 Sep 1941 in Davenport and died on 15 Nov 2006 in Cedar Rapids at age 65. They had one daughter: Teresa C. She worked as a secretary for IBM for 24 years, retiring in 1991. She then worked at St. Luke's Hospital for seven years, retiring in 2001. She died of cancer. He served in the Marines from 1955 to 1958. He worked as a glazier with the local #581 for 28 years retiring in 1991. Leonard was a member of the FOE #2272, Moose Lodge #304, Marine Corps League and was a lifetime member of Local Union #581. Survivors: three brothers, Paul (Karen) of Tucson, Ariz., Randy (Judy) of Jackson, Miss., and Robert (Wilai) of Glendale, Ariz.; and one sister, Mary (Keith) Koch of Cottage Grove, Minn.

He enlisted in the Army on 23 Jun 1944 at Camp Dodge Herrold. He lived in Chickasaw Co. He had completed grammar school and was employed as an automobile serviceman.
It is never too late to be honored and Clem Gerleman at 92, is proud to show his medals  earned by service during World War II -- 61 years after his discharge.
"I'm proud to get them," Gerleman said. He grew up near St. Lucas and has lived at the Ossian Senior Hospice since this fall.
After initially being denied his service medals, Gerleman's niece, Mary Kay Kock, of Cottage Grove, Minn. contacted Sen. Charles Grassley's office.
"It didn't take much time at all," Kock said. After a check of the national registry of veterans, where Gerleman's record was in good standing, it only took about a month to get them sent. Grassley's letter accompanying the medals, thanked Gerleman for his service and commitment to the American freedom he fought to preserve during WW II under General George Patton.
Gerleman was awarded six citations including the Good Conduct medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign with three bronze star attachments, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Claps, Honorable Service lapel Button of W.W.II and Sharpshooter Badge and rifle bar.
Gerleman entered the Army Aug. 23, 1944 at age 32. He had never married. His father died when Gerleman was 11 and his mother when he was 21. The country was at war with the Germans and Gerleman said he felt he had to serve.
Jan. 14, 1945 during the European Theater in Bastogne, Belgium, the orders came that the next morning he was heading to the front lines of the battle and he was to be in the lead tank. Gerleman ran the machine guns and was the assistant driver. He shot 60 rounds of ammunition at a time to clear away the enemy fire for the Americans to advance.
The Germans had been bombing Bastogne since the week before Christmas with plans to take Belgium via the Ardennes. General Patton sent troops to free the city December 27 and thousands of soldiers were in hand to hand combat in the woods and surrounding towns. January 14, the Germans retreated from Bastogne, leaving behind a destroyed city and thousands lost their lives.
Gerleman remembered the men occasionally got out of the tank to look for land mines. In Bastogne, he remembers watching as a fellow solider was killed and another lost both his legs when a mine blew up.
Gerleman remembers that first day how when a German tank approached, they exchanged fire and were able to start the German tank on fire. As the occupants got out, they took them as prisoners of war. Later they trekked across Luxembourg and headed for Germany. Gerleman remembers seeing General Patton him at the crossing the Rhine River on a pontoon bridge in Germany. They had been exchanging fire with the Germans on the crossing and Gerleman's tank was one of the first to cross the bridge, as part of the 6th Cavalry that Patton led.
"I saw him. He was standing along the Rhine River between a Jeep and the buildings," Gerleman said. Patton was talking to the German forces in German, he claims. The son of second generation German immigrants, himself, Clem grew up speaking German. His grandparents had settled in Iowa after immigrating from Germany. He never used his second language as a soldier.
"I didn't want to talk it. I was afraid I'd get myself into trouble," he said.
He saw the Gerleman family name printed on buildings in Germany as he passed through.
The Germans surrendered May 8, 1945. "The flowers were in bloom and men and women were walking down the street in shirt sleeves," he said.
Gerleman continued to serve in the post war until he became sick while at Hamburg,Germany around July 5, 1945. Gerleman contracted spinal meningitis and was in a hospital in Germany six to seven weeks recovering.
He had three spinal taps and feels lucky to have lived through it. He was under a doctor's care, but it was a time before antibiotics and many modern treatments. He was discharged August 13, 1946 after a long ride home on a ship and a debriefing in Illinois.
Gerleman was glad to be home, and never was interested in going back. He worked for local farmers and moved around the area from New Hampton, Osage, Blue Earth, North Washington and lived for years in the New Hampton Hotel before returning to the home farm with his brothers. Only two of the family of nine married and the bachelor brothers worked the home farm together for many years.
In talking with her uncle, Kock said that his service in the Army was an important time in his life, and she wanted him to have something of it. She and Gerleman have been able to reconnect as family during the past few years.
He is the last surviving member of his family.
Gerleman was able to retire on his Army pension at age 65, but wasn't able to be a decorated veteran until a few weeks ago. Now he is as one of the few WWII veterans still able to tell the stories - more than what is just printed in the history books.

4-Philomina Gerleman was born on 3 Feb 1869 in Kansas, died on 2 Nov 1955 at age 86, and was buried in Our Lady of Seven Dolors. In 1920, she was 50 years old and lived with her brother, Ferdinand, in Prairie.

4-Ferdinand F. (Ferd) Gerleman was born in Feb 1873 in Kansas. He married Magdelena Klemmer. Magdelena was born in Kansas and died before 1920 in Prairie, Kossuth Co., Iowa. They had four children.

In 1900, Ferdinand Gurleman, age 28, lived in Clear Lake, Iowa where he was employed as a creamery man. The 1910 census shows him living with his mother, Katherine and sister Philomina. He was 33 years old, a widow. In 1915 to 1920 they lived in Prairie. No draft card was found for him. Elizabeth K. Gerleman, age 83, referred to as "mother", lived with them along with his sister, Philomena. In 1925 they lived in Prairie, Kossuth Co., Iowa. Katherine Gerleman, his mother, age 89, still lived with them. He identified his parents as Wm. Gerleman and Katherin Witte. Magdelena's parents remain unknown.

Ricke in 1932, son of Henry Ricke and Maria Agnes Klass. He was born on 22 Dec 1901 in Williams, Hamilton Co., Iowa and died on 27 May 1969 in Wesley, Kossuth Co., Iowa at age 67. Lou and Ann lived on the Ricke farm in Williams Iowa and then with his borther Lawrence and his wife Marie.

5-Rose Gerleman was born in 1908, died in 1925 in Prairie, Kossuth Co., Iowa at age 17, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

3-Elisabeth Gerleman was born on 7 Jan 1828 in Datteln, Westphalia and died from 1910 to 1920 at age 82. Elisabeth married Frederick Drees. He was born in 1826 in Oldenburg and died before 1910. They had five children.

The 1856 census shows Frederick and Elisabeth living with his older brother and his family. By 1860 they had two more children and had moved to Fort Atkinson where he was a farmer. The 1870 census shows them living in Ray, Franklin Co., Indiana. In 1910, Elisabeth lived in Springfield Twp. with her nephew, Charles F. Gerleman.

Catharina was born in Nov 1845 in Preussen, died in 1922 in Festina at age 77, and was buried in Our Lady of Seven Dolors. They had 13 children.

He applied for a passport and stated that he was born on the 31st day of July, 1831 and emigrated in the year 1847 with his parents from the province of Westphalia, Kingdom of Prussia by the written consent of the Prusian government which has been submitted for me to the United States where he has resided ever since in the state of Iowa where he has acquired the right of citizenship. He now wishes to visit his native country for that purpose desires a passport. His object is to pay a visit to his relatives. The description of his person is; age, nearly 31 years as of above. His passport was issued on 13 Jun 1862.

In 1870 they were in Kansas where two of their children were born. They were in Tennessee in 1874 when Mary was born. They returned to Iowa by 1877 when Fred was born. The 1880 census theym living in Washington, Winneshiek Co.Iowa with six children.

4-Josephine A. Gerleman was born in 1870 in Kansas. Josephine married Clemence J. French in 1894 in Winneshiek Co., Iowa. Clemence was born in 1866 in Iowa and died in 1935 at age 69. They had five children. She appears with this family in 1880 in Iowa. In 1910 they lived in Calmar. His mother, Kathaline French, age 78, lived with them.

5-Edward H. French was born in 1897 and died young. No draft registration was found for him, nor was he found after 1910.

5-Joseph C. French was born in 1901 and died after 1930 and is not in SS index. In 1930 he was single and lived in Cedar Rapids. Joseph married Virginia.

4-Joseph William Gerleman was born on 14 Dec 1871 in Senica, Kansas and died on 23 May 1964 in Seneca at age 92. He was 9 years old in the 1880 census. Joseph married Pauline Josephine Cremer on 26 Oct 1896 in Our Lady of Seven Dolors, daughter of Henry Cremer and Caroline Bachel. Pauline was born in 1869 in Iowa and died in 1948 at age 79. They had four children.

In 1900 they lived in Calmar. Living with them was eighteen year old George Balk, employed as a servant. In 1920-1925 they still lived in Calmar. On 28 Oct 1945, they celebrtated their 50th wedding annivesary with a renewal of vows at St Aloysius Church in Calmar.

5-Edmund Elmer Gerleman was born on 15 Aug 1899, died on 29 Mar 1992 in Calmar at age 92, and was buried in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Calmar. His draft registration shows he was employed on the farm of Joseph Gerleman in Calmar. Edmund married Cecelia Kuennen on 8 Sep 1931, daughter of Henry Wenzeslaus Kuennen and Mary Elizabeth Boeding. Cecelia was born on 5 Apr 1911 in St. Lucas and died after 2008. They had seven children.

6-Paul Joseph (Joey) Gerleman was born on 3 Oct 1932 in Decorah. Paul married Rita E. Kriener on 25 Aug 1953 in St. Luke's Catholic Church, daughter of Frank (Chris) Kriener and Cecelia Kruse. Rita was born on 13 Jun 1935, died on 5 Mar 2006 in Decorah at age 70, and was buried in St. Benedict's Cemetery. They had seven children.

In March of 1956 they moved to the farm near Calmar, vacated by the Gordian Lensing family who moved to Fort Atkinson. In 1957 he served as a Council member for the adult education classes in Calmar along with Gordian Lensing and Rev.Alphonse Gerleman. In 1964 he was an usher at his sister, Mardell's wedding. On 24 Aug 2003 they celebrated their 50th anniversary with an open house at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ossian.

6-Wilfred Hageman was born on 28 Jun 1941 and died on 2 Dec 2003 in Bend, Deschutes Co., Oregon at age 62. Wilfred married Judith Ann (Judy) Leigh on 4 Nov 1967. Judith was born on 28 Sep 1946. They had two children.

A private memorial was held in Bend, OR for Wilfred "Bill" Hageman and in the spring of 2004 a special celebration will be held in Cresco.
After high school he went into the Army for two years. He returned to Cresco.
On November 4, 1967 he married Judy Leigh and they moved to California where he worked for United Airlines as a mechanic. From there they moved to southern California where he worked at Lawrence Welk Country Club as a golf course mechanic for almost 25 years.
In the spring of 1996 Bill became ill and in 1997 was diagnosed with Multi-systems Ataix-degeneration of the cerebellum. He fought the disease and remained at home until the last 20 days of his life. He was in Hospice House in Bend at the time of his death.

3-Heinrich Wilhelm Gerleman was born on 6 Nov 1833 in Datteln, Westphalia, died on 15 Dec 1924 in Center, Lyon Co., Kansas at age 91, and was buried in St. Josephs Cemetery. Heinrich married Anna Marie Hildebrandt, daughter of Wolfgang Adam Hildebrandt and Katherina Schwarz. Anna was born on 5 Jul 1843 in Altschneeburg, Tiefenbach, Bavaria, died on 23 Jul 1917 in Center, Lyon Co., Kansas at age 74, and was buried in St. Josephs Cemetery. They had 12 children.

On 3 Jan 1865, Henry received a passport. He stated he was thrity years old and five feet ten inches tall. He stated that he was a resident of Festina, Iowa and had declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States. So it appears that Henry and Charles took a trip back to Germany in 1865.

By 1873 they had left Kansas and were in Lawrnece Co., Tennessee where Henry purchased land next to St. Joseph's Church. That church has a stained glass window with his name in it. They next lived in Warren Co., Iowa and by August of 1885 had returned to Kansas. The Souvenir of the Golden Jubilee 1885-1935 notes that Henry sang bass in a choir of six at the dedication of the newly erected St. Joseph's Church in Olpe. In 1910 they were recorded as Gerlemann in Center Twp., Lyon Co., Kansas. Their son, Joseph, and daughter, Kate, still lived with them. They lost two children in infancy.

4-Henry W. Gerleman was born in 1860 and died on 1 Apr 1930 in Bigfork, Flathead Co., Montana at age 70. His birth location was found as Arkansas and Tennessee. In 1920 he lived in Flathead where he was employed as a hired hand and lived with the Henry Oldenburg family. Henry married Elizabeth Deitrich in 1883, daughter of Phillip Deitrich and Dorothee Luke. Elizabeth was born in Dec 1864 in St. Cloud, Stearns Co., Minnesota, died in Seattle, King Co., Washington, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery. They had five children. The marriage ended in divorce before 1910.

In 1900 they lived in Flathead Twp., Montana. The 1910 census shows they were divorced. In August of 1928, she traveled to Seattle with sister, J. B. Detrich, and her grandson. They spent several days at Mount Ranier National Park.
Daily Inter Lake...April 1, 1930.... Henry Gerleman, age 78, died this morning following an illness of several years. Mr. Gerleman had been a resident of Flathead County for 39 years, most of the time a resident at Big Fork. The body is at the Sherman and Son Funeral Home pending arrangements which will be made unpon the arrival of his son, Phillip Gerleman from Helena.

6-Phillip William Gerleman was born on 16 Oct 1921 in Helena, Lewis & Clark Co., Montana, died on 16 Jun 2001 in Helena at age 79, and was buried in Montana State Veterans Cemetery.

He was a Western Union Messenger. He applied for enlistmennt in May of 1939 but was advised to wait for his 18th birthday. He enlisted in November of 1940 and went to the U.S. Naval Training Station at San Diego for recruit training. He sailed on 19 Oct 1941 on the Lexington. GM1, US Navy, World War II, Korea, Bronze Star Medal. He was at Pearl Harbor on the ship Argonne, a gunnery training ship, on 7 Dec 1941 when the Japanese attacked. He received the WWII Victory medal and the American Defense Medal at the Navy recruiting station in Helena on Jan. 4, 1948. Phillip married Bernice Louise Copenhaver in Apr 1949 in Helena, daughter of Gaylord Copenhaver and Mary Hopp. Bernice was born in Jul 1920. They had two children.

In 1948 Philip Gerleman built a new home at 1026 Missoula in Helena. She served as President of the Emerson School PTA.

Gerleman of 1023 Eighth Avenue qualified with the pistol and was authorized to wear the marksman badge as a result of his accuracy on the firing range at Scott Field, Ill., parent radio school of the army air forces traning command, wehre he is now stationed. [The Independent-Record, June 19, 1944]. He was next stationed at Sioux Falls to the Army Air Forces for training as a radio operator mechanic. He was discharged from the Army on 14 Feb. 1946.

From Der Carroll Demokrat, Feb. 11, 1898.....Mr. Henry Timp, father-in-law of Mr. Hermann Gehling, has been staying with his daughter and son-in-law for the last week on a visit. Mr. Timp is an old settler who came to America as a youth in the 1840's and settled in Iowa in 1853. For many years, he has been accustomed to a Westphalian dialect, but we noted a few Lower Rhine expressions, and so we learned that he is a Weselaner. Mr. Timp has experienced a lot, and he appears to be an honest German farmer whose heart is in the right place.

The 1900 census shows they had eight children, all living. This conflicts with the nine children listed with them in 1900. They lived next to the Joseph Imohle family.

April 18, 2007......Timp family grateful to volunteer firefighters after blaze damages home. March 20 about 9:30 p.m., fire forced the family to flee their home. On that evening John and Brenda Timp were ending a normal day. Brenda was in the living room eating a snack after a long day at work and an evening meeting. John was already in bed. Their 19 year old daughter Keely and her friend, Ben Van Horn, were watching TV in another room of the house.
Brenda thought she smelled something hot and believed it was coming from a nearby lamp. She sensed that something wasn't right and asked Ben to have a look around. When he opened the door between the house and garage, he found the area fully engulfed in flames. He encouraged Brenda to dial 911. Brenda Timp woke her husband John and asked him to have a look around. The Timps fled their home with just their family pets and the clothes on their backs. "They knew exactly what to save; we owe all of the firefighters a great deal of gratitude. They were awesome!" acknowledged Brenda Timp.

Boy hospitalized after crash Jason Wenthold, 16, rural Ossian, is hospitalized in stable condition after his vehicle rolled several times Monday evening on a county gravel road seven miles south of town. Winneshiek County authorities said Wenthold, the lone occupant of his vehicle, was eastbound at 6:25 p.m. when the vehicle went out of control and rolled on the roadway. Wenthold suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

In 1995, Dana White began working as a hired hand on James Wenthold's dairy farm near Ossian, Iowa. White lived in a small house on the Wenthold farm with his wife and young child, and the Wenthold family lived in the main farmhouse.
On August 17, 1998, Wenthold's nineteen-year-old daughter, Joy, was home alone at the main farmhouse. White knocked on the door of the farmhouse and asked Joy for assistance in locating some medication for livestock. Joy could not find one of the medications White was looking for and he left. White subsequently returned to the Wenthold's house on several occasions with questions or information about medications. The last time White came to the main farmhouse, he pointed a rifle at Joy's face and entered the house. White ordered Joy to lie down on the floor and put her hands behind her head.
Joy began talking to White in an effort to calm him down. She persuaded him to sit at a table and talk with her. At some point, Joy offered White a glass of water. After she got water out of the faucet, she turned and saw White pointing the rifle at her. She asked, "Dana, what are you doing?" White laughed and said, "Oh, I'm just kidding." He then lowered the rifle, and Joy stated, "Don't do that, Dana. It is not funny." White then raised the rifle again and said, "Sorry, I have to do this." He had a very serious look on his face. Joy started to run. As soon as she did, White shot her in the left arm. Joy kept running toward a door. As she approached and began opening a door to the garage, White shot her again, this time in her right arm and side.
Despite being shot a second time, Joy was able to exit the door. After leaving the house, she fell by the front left tire of her father's pickup truck in the garage. She pretended to be dead so White would not shoot her anymore. White entered the garage briefly, ran to a window, looked outside, and then returned to the house. Once inside, he fired multiple shots and then threw his rifle onto the washer and dryer in the laundry room. Joy heard White going through her father's desk. From her position in the garage, Joy observed White open the basement door. She then heard him go down the basement steps.
In an effort to escape, Joy got up, entered the truck and turned the key. Because the truck was a diesel, she had to wait about thirty seconds before firing the engine. Joy started the truck, pushed the garage door opener button, and put the truck in reverse. At that point, she saw White looking at where she had been laying with an expression of shock on his face.
Joy gunned the truck and backed out of the garage. White ran after her. He grabbed onto the side of the truck and got into the truck bed. Joy shifted into drive and tried to drive away from the farmyard. She swerved the truck back and forth in an effort to shake White off her vehicle. At some point, White was able to open the driver's side door. He then struck Joy in the face breaking her glasses. The door swung shut and Joy continued to drive as fast as she could. White was thrown from the vehicle into a ditch. Joy drove to a relative's house and got help. She sustained serious injuries, which required numerous, extensive surgeries.
Meanwhile, White drove off in another truck with his infant son and got stuck in the mud. He called for an ambulance from a nearby farm requesting help for his son. Officers eventually arrived and arrested White at the farm without incident. The Wenthold farmhouse was later found engulfed in flames. The farmhouse burned to the ground. An accelerant was used to start the fire. White's gun was found on the washer and dryer.
At trial, White's theory of defense centered on his mental condition. White testified at trial. He could offer no reason for his actions and his motive for the shooting spree remains unclear. Following a three week trial, the jury found White guilty of: two counts of attempted murder based on the shots fired inside the farmhouse; assault with intent to inflict serious injury, as a lesser included offense of attempted murder, based on the assault as the victim attempted to leave the property; reckless use of fire as a lesser included offense of second-degree arson; two counts of willful injury while in possession of a firearm; and unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon. The district court sentenced White to two indeterminate, twenty-five year prison terms for attempted murder, two indeterminate, ten-year prison terms for willful injury, a five-year indeterminate prison term for unauthorized use of an offensive weapon, an indeterminate two-year term for assault with intent to inflict serious injury, and one year for reckless use of a firearm, to be served consecutively. His total prison term was not to exceed seventy-eight years.


A former Ossian farm worker convicted of shooting the daughter of his boss and setting a fire has had his prison sentence cut nearly in half. Dana White was convicted in 1999 of two counts of attempted murder, two counts of willful injury, assault, reckless use of fire and unauthorized use or possession of an offensive weapon. White was employed at the Wenthold Dairy Farm near Ossian when he shot 19-year-old Joy Wenthold, and then set her family's home on fire. White was sentenced to 78 years in jail, but the Iowa Court of Appeals threw out three of the seven convictions and ordered a resentencing. The sentence was cut to 41 years.

Joseph Gerleman was preceded in death by his parents: Max and Rose Beckman Gerleman; four sisters: Dorothy Remke, Mae Bushman, Rose Mary Gerleman and Eunice Gerleman and three brothers: Richard Gerleman, Gerald Gerleman and Robert Gerleman.

Waterloo Daily Courier....August 24, 1972...."Gerald Joseph Gerleman, 19, of Rt. 1, Decorah, was taken to a Decorah hospital for treatment of injuries received in a motorcycle mishap Tuesday. According to the sheriff's report the mishap occurred at 9 p.m., 10 miles south of Decorah on the Ossian blacktop. Apparently Gerleman did not see a cow standing in the middle of the road and was unable to avoid hitting the animal.
The motorcycle that Gerleman was driving flipped over into the ditch, the cow was not injured."

In 1870 he was employed as a servant in LaCrosse. In 1900 he lived in Lewiston where he was employed as a gardner. On 3 Jan. 1865, Charles Gerlemann received a passport. His application shows he was a subject of the King of Prussia. He was born in Datten, Prussia and currently was a farmer in Washington Twp., Winneshiek Co., Iowa. He says he has been a resident of the United States for ten years and has voted and declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States. He was twenty five years old and five feet ten inches tall.
His father lived here and was a citizen of the United States. He wanted to travel abroad to see his friends for a short time. His witnesses were Savell (sp?) Gerlemann, Frederick Gerlemann and Henry Gerlemann.
